| Rainwalk Apartments (2009) |
|
On the morning of Wednesday, December 23, 2009, many buildings of the Rainwalk Apartments caught fire. When we went to the apartments to see how we could help, we were delighted to see one-half of the complex office already had toys donated from the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation for the children. The was also a room full of clothes, a hallway full of shoes, a studio apartment getting filled with household supplies, and person after person coming in dropping off more and more supplies. We have to say, the community stepped up tremendously to assist these families! It was incredible! Since the management was coordinating the donations, we asked what was still needed. They recommended toiletries. The management also gave us a list of the affected families. There were seven families with children. Since the Burn Foundation had already donated so many toys, it was decided that we would get toiletries for everyone affected and gift cards for the families with children. We went shopping at Costco and supplied almost $300 in toiletries that included soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant. In addition, we purchased plastic cups, paper plates and plastic utensils for all of the affected families. For the seven families with children, we also gave them Vons gift cards that ranged in value from $50 to $100.
